Department Of Neurology

Department Overview:

It was in the year 1984 that a separate unit of Neurology was created in the Department of Medicine. Prof. K. K. Sikka ward in the Department of Medicine was earmarked for the neurology unit. In the year 2009, Dr. Navneet Kumar (Principal & Dean) joined as Professor, and in the year 2016, Dr. Alok Verma joined as Head of Department of Neurology. Under his leadership, the department started functioning full-fledged with great enthusiasm and inspiration, similar to the Department of Neurology at SGPGI, KGMC, RML, and UPUMS Saifai.

The first Neuroscience Centre of Uttar Pradesh was started at GSVM Medical College in 2016, offering facilities for both Neurology and Neurosurgery. The department operates in a well-equipped Neuroscience building featuring 100 beds with separate wards for male and female patients to respect privacy and maintain patient dignity. The department supports the Ayushman Bharat Yojana to provide free treatment to patients living below the poverty line.

The GSVSSPGI (PMSSY Block) inaugurated in the year 2022 is a fully functional, state-of-the-art facility with 30 beds, handling an OPD load of approximately 250–300 patients every day.

Key Facilities & Infrastructure

• Major reception centre for neurological disorders of all types in the region with 66 beds, including a 6-bed HDU Stroke Unit.
• Full-fledged Natus & Clarity unit providing 26-Channel EEG and 26-Channel Video EEG.
• Full-fledged Natus NCV Machine.
• Fully equipped physiotherapy and speech therapy units established for outdoor and indoor patients (provided free of cost).

Neuro-Critical Care:

A dedicated 6-bedded Neuro-Critical Care Unit was started in January 2022 with 3 Senior Residents (DM Neurology residents) on duty round the clock under faculty guidance. It provides intensive care for common neurological conditions such as strokes, ruptured aneurysms, brain and spinal cord injuries from trauma, status epilepticus, infections of the brain, and weakness of respiratory muscles.

Botulinum Toxin Clinic:

Regular sessions for Botulinum Toxin injections in movement disorders and spasticity are held once every month. Patients suffering from blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, writer's cramp, post-stroke spasticity, and other spastic disorders receive therapy.

Department Of Neurosurgery

About Department:

The Neurosurgery unit was started on 04.06.2015 as a separate unit in General Surgery under Dr. I. N. Bajpai. The Letter of Permission (LOP) for M.Ch. was granted on 29/12/2021 during the academic session 2021-22. In the year 2016, Dr. Manish Singh joined as Head of Department of Neurosurgery, and under his leadership, the department started functioning full-fledged with great enthusiasm and inspiration.

It is the first Government Medical College in the state of Uttar Pradesh to offer the prestigious M.Ch. course in Neurosurgery. Three General Surgeons join each year on the basis of merit via the competitive NEET-SS exam, and the course is well-recognized by NMC.

Key Infrastructure & Facilities:

• Neuroscience Centre: The first Neuroscience Centre of Uttar Pradesh was started at GSVM Medical College in 2016, offering facilities for both Neurosurgery and Neurology.
• Inpatient Facilities: The department runs in a well-equipped Neuroscience building offering 100 beds with separate wards.
• Emergency & Neuro-Trauma Unit: Features a separate 6-bed ICU for dedicated care of neuro-trauma patients.
• GSVSSPGI (PMSSY Block): Inaugurated in 2022, this fully functional, state-of-the-art facility features 80 beds and handles an OPD load of approximately 250–300 patients every day.

Department Of Gastroenterology - PMSSY

About Department:

The Department of Gastroenterology was established in June 2022 under the leadership of Dr. Vinay Kumar. This department is the 6th Gastroenterology Department to be established in Uttar Pradesh, next to SGPGIMS Lucknow, KGMU Lucknow, BHU Varanasi, Prayagraj Medical College and RMLIMS Lucknow. Dr. Vinay Kumar is the first and present Head of Department.

In a very short time, this department has been established as a tertiary referral centre for specialized and quality care of patients with gastroenterologic, hepatologic and pancreato-biliary disorders, as well as for advanced GI endoscopic procedures.

Department Of Urology

The Department of Urology at GSVM Medical College, housed in the modern PMSSY building, is committed to providing top-tier urological care. Led by Dr. Anil J. Baid, Assistant Professor and esteemed urologist, the department offers a wide range of specialized urological services.

Department Of Nephrology

About the Department:

The Department of Nephrology was established in June 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Yuvraj Gulati. This department is the 5th Nephrology department to have been established in Uttar Pradesh, next to SGPGIMS Lucknow, KGMU Lucknow, BHU Varanasi and RMLIMS Lucknow. Dr. Yuvraj Gulati is the first and present Head of the Department.

In a very short time, this department has established a tertiary referral centre for specialized and quality care of patients with renal disorders as well as for those requiring hemodialysis.
